The Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS) presented an electrifying evening of music, storytelling, and celebration with Byron Stripling’s Mardi Gras and All That Jazz at Barrel 118. A masterful trumpeter and charismatic vocalist, Stripling captivated the audience with a thrilling performance that seamlessly blended New Orleans-style jazz, blues, and swing with humor and personal anecdotes, making the evening a truly unforgettable experience.
Stripling's virtuosity was undeniable from the first powerful blast of his trumpet. His technical precision, effortless improvisation, and deep connection to the music created an exhilarating atmosphere, whether soaring through high-energy numbers like When the Saints Go Marching In or delivering soulful, blues-infused ballads. His rich, expressive voice added another layer of charm, particularly on classics like Basin Street Blues and What a Wonderful World, evoking warmth and nostalgia.
Adding to the evening’s magic was the incomparable Bobby Floyd, whose mastery of the piano and Hammond B3 organ infused each piece with depth and soul. A true jazz legend, Floyd’s artistry brought the spirit of classic jazz to life, especially when he unleashed the legendary Wurlitzer sounds of the Hammond, filling the venue with its unmistakable warmth and richness. His impeccable technique and deep-rooted groove elevated every performance, solidifying his status as one of the most revered musicians in jazz today.
Beyond the music, Stripling’s engaging storytelling and humor wove seamlessly into the performance, offering the audience a glimpse into his remarkable career and personal experiences. His warmth and charisma created an intimate connection, making the concert feel like a gathering of close friends rather than a packed venue. The enthusiastic audience clapped, laughed, and reveled in the spirit of Mardi Gras, fully immersed in the evening’s joyful celebration.
Set against the stylish and rustic ambiance of Barrel 118, the night was a perfect blend of world-class musicianship, dynamic stage presence, and audience engagement. Mardi Gras and All That Jazz was more than just a concert—it was a soul-stirring, jubilant experience that left attendees uplifted and wanting more.
Byron Stripling is one of the most sought-after musicians in the country. He is the Artistic Director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Principal Pops Conductor for The Milwaukee Symphony and The Pittsburgh Symphony. Stripling was the lead trumpeter for The Count Basie Orchestra and recorded extensively with Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Brubeck, and Lionel Hampton, among many others. OPAS was honored to have him join our Lounge Series and bring him to Greene County High School to present to students.
